Life After a Transplant

Life after kidney donation is healthy, full, and meaningful

Donating a kidney is an extraordinary act of life-saving kindness. However, for the donors, it is not just a once in a lifetime moment – but a step that continues to accompany them throughout their lives. Life with one kidney continues almost unchanged, and after a short recovery period, most donors gradually return to a full routine that includes work, physical activity, and a regular daily schedule – often with a deeper sense of satisfaction.

Beyond the physical impact, many donors report a strengthened sense of the value of giving and community, and an overall positive change in their lifestyle.

Recovery and recuperation – what do you need to know?

During the initial recovery period, it is important to keep the following in mind:

  • Avoid heavy lifting – During the first six weeks after the donation, it is important to avoid lifting weights over 5 kg, to prevent the development of a hernia.
  • Return to work – Many donors returning to non-physical jobs do so within 2-3 weeks, while donors working in physical jobs may need a longer recovery time.
  • Listen to your body – We recommend you rest, incorporate light walks, and enjoy the support of family and friends.
